Lonehill Dam Kariba weed clean-up shows promising progress
Ward 94 councillor David Foley shared a positive update from Lonehill Dam, where efforts to clear invasive Kariba weed are showing success five weeks into a nine-week eco-clean-up programme.
Five weeks into a dedicated clean-up initiative, Ward 94 councillor David Foley has shared a positive update from the Lonehill Dam, following a significant effort to combat the invasive Kariba weed that had overtaken parts of the body of water.
On July 9, Foley confirmed that the eco-friendly water purification process, which involves the use of specialised eco-granules, is starting to show visible results. “A lot of the weed is starting to die. There are some new little green shoots, but as the water’s nutrients and nitrates are removed, it ensures the Kariba weed cannot continue growing.”
The nine-week programme, now past the halfway mark, aims to restore the dam’s ecological balance by purifying the water and limiting the nutrient sources that feed the invasive weed. “We’ve taken a couple of water samples, and I’m currently waiting for the results.” Foley added that this would give a clearer before-and-after picture of the water quality.

He also flagged a noticeable improvement in water clarity on one side of the dam, though wind patterns continue to push remaining weed remnants into one corner.
Foley encouraged residents to get involved. “If anybody wants to, they can certainly bring their swimming pool scooper or skimmer and take some of the stuff out. Feel free to do that at any time.”

With four weeks remaining in the clean-up programme, residents can expect further updates as the initiative progresses. Foley promised another update in a week’s time.
