Sups builds Afro-house identity with latest collaborative release

Carving a place in the South African Afro-house and deep house scene, Sups offers his latest release, Sups & King Person – Two Twenty Four (King Person’s Touch).

South African music producer Masupha ‘Sups’ None continues to carve his own space in the Afro-house and deep house scene with his latest release, Sups & King Person – Two Twenty Four (King Person’s Touch).

“Music is more than entertainment for me,” said Sups. “It is a form of expression, a way to communicate emotions and create experiences that listeners can connect with on a personal level.”

The collaboration marks another chapter in his evolving journey. Sups, who balances music production with a background in computer science, began producing in 2018 and gradually developed a deeper appreciation for Afro-house and deep house. “These genres gave me space to explore sound, rhythm, atmosphere and emotion without being restricted by conventional songwriting structures,” he said. “I am interested in the feeling a composition leaves behind. The relationship between melodies, percussion, basslines and atmospheric elements allows the music to tell its own story.”

One idea that defines his approach is music’s ability to influence how people feel. “It can offer comfort during difficult moments, provide an escape from everyday pressures or create a sense of connection between people who might otherwise have little in common,” Sups said. “Instrumental music is particularly powerful. Without relying on lyrics, a producer can use melodies, harmonies, rhythms, and changes in atmosphere to express emotions that are sometimes difficult to put into words.”

His earlier work, including the 2021 Rejuvenations project and the 2022 Rejuvenations EP featuring Light & Shadow, reflects this ongoing exploration. “Every project is an opportunity to discover something new,” he said. “The ultimate goal is not simply to make a track that people enjoy listening to, but to create something that makes them feel something.”

Working with King Person brought collaboration into focus. “Working with another creative mind offers an opportunity to explore different ideas and approaches,” Sups said. “Collaboration can introduce new perspectives into the production process, challenging artists to move beyond their usual creative habits while maintaining the identity that makes their work distinctive.”

His computer science studies have created a natural connection. “Programming involves breaking down problems, testing solutions, correcting errors, and refining a system until it works as intended. Music production follows a similar process,” he said. “Both disciplines demand curiosity, persistence, and a willingness to learn from mistakes.”

As he continues, Sups remains focused on the experience his music creates. “Beyond recognition or numbers, there is the possibility of making a composition that connects with someone, changes their mood, or becomes part of a meaningful moment in their life,” he said. “That remains the central motivation, to keep learning, keep experimenting, and keep producing music that communicates something beyond the sound itself.”
