Protest action reported at Clay Oven

Sandton CPF confirms an ongoing protest by Witkoppen Road and Main Avenue after Clay Oven informal settlement residents blocked the road with burning tyres and debris.

Protest action broke out at the corner of Witkoppen Road and Main Avenue near Clay Oven informal settlement as residents took to the streets to protest.

Roshan Byjnal, public relations officer for Sandton CPF, confirmed the protest. “Our CPF members on scene at Clay Oven have reported that the situation is currently calm. Multiple security companies and CPF are present. JMPD officers are engaging with the protestors,” he said.

While the cause of the protest is still under investigation, a Clay Oven resident, who asked to remain anonymous, told Fourways Review that residents took to the streets after a man was murdered in the settlement earlier that morning.

According to the resident, the body had been left unattended for hours despite repeated calls to authorities.

“We were calling the police the whole day and no one came. The body was just lying there. People started protesting because they wanted the police to respond,” the resident said.

Byjnal confirmed that the CPF was only made aware of the body at around 16:30. “We immediately reported the matter to Sandton SAPS. By 18:00, we received reports that residents had started protesting. We are still investigating, but it does appear the two events are related,” he explained.

Sandton SAPS, JMPD and private security companies remain on scene to monitor the situation.

Fourways Review is trying to contact JMPD and Sandton SAPS about this issue. More information will be provided once it becomes available.

Motorists are advised to use alternative routes until the road is cleared.
