JW confirms investigation into Sunninghill meter dispute

Johannesburg Water has confirmed it is investigating the case of a Sunninghill pensioner who has been left high and dry after a disputed smart meter installation.

Following a disputed smart meter installation, which left a 72-year-old Sunninghill resident without water, Johannesburg Water (JW) has confirmed they are investigating.

Daniel Oganah, who has lived on Edison Crescent for two decades, says his old meter was removed in September 2024 and replaced with a smart meter he never requested. Since then, he has not received any water bills. Then, earlier this month, he discovered that his meter had been removed entirely, leaving him without supply.

JW spokesperson Nolwazi Shabalala said the depot team had reviewed the case. “At the address, a disconnection was carried out, under instruction from the City of Johannesburg, due to an outstanding account.”

Oganah disputes the explanation. “Since September 1, 2024, when the smart meter was installed, I have not received any water bills from JW. My wife has been paying, but doing so intermittently.”

Oganah said, he believes JW has his water meter installed at the wrong address. “Checking documentation involved, I noticed that they relate another property in Edison Crescent, not mine.”

We did follow up with JW regarding Oganah’s claims, and are awaiting response. They will be published as soon as they are made available.
