Bollards installed to stop illegal parking on Sunrise Boulevard

Cars and vans once turned pavements into parking lots, now the area is being reclaimed for pedestrians.

Vehicles parking on pavements along Sunrise Boulevard had become a daily frustration for residents and shoppers, not only creating a safety hazard, but turning the busy road into an eyesore.

In response, the Fourways Improvement District (FID), together with Fourways Crossing Shopping Centre, has stepped in to restore order.

Bollards are now being installed to line the pavement, preventing cars and pickup vans from blocking pedestrian walkways.

Ward 94 councillor David Foley said the problem had dragged on for years before being tackled through the FID initiative. “This complaint has been going on for a number of years.

Pedestrians were forced to walk in the road, which was dangerous and unacceptable. With the FID’s formation, this became one of the key issues to address.”

Half of the bollards have already been installed, with the project expected to be completed soon. The work is funded by collective contributions from the FID.

Foley said this was just one of several visible upgrades planned for the suburb.

“Residents can expect more changes in the future as we continue improving Fourways. By-law enforcement prohibits vehicles from parking on pedestrian walkways, and officials hope the bollards will not only improve safety but also restore a cleaner look to the area.”
