Lonehill’s Engen garage fuel spill project nears completion

Lonehill roads set to be safer and cleaner as Engen garage spill project nears completion, with repairs and improvements just around the corner.

Lonehill residents and motorists are set to benefit from a safer and cleaner stretch of road near the Engen garage, as the fuel spill prevention project nears completion.

Ward 94 councillor David Foley confirmed that a recent site inspection shows the project is on track to be finished within the next two weeks.

“I’m very happy with the progress. Once completed, I’ll co-ordinate with Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) to install a storm water channel, and do a deep patch to ensure the road is safe and free of potholes going forward.”

The initiative, a joint effort between the garage owners and the local municipality, addresses the issue of excess fuel and wash water spilling onto the road, a problem that had been damaging the tar surface.

The solution involves creating a channel that directs liquids into a separator pit, which removes harmful chemicals before safely disposing of the water.

Mahesh Valabh, one of the garage owners, emphasised the importance of community responsibility.

“When councillor Foley pointed out the issue, we were happy to co-operate. It’s our duty to make sure our customers and the public are safe.”

Site manager Trust Dube added that while the project has required a significant financial investment, the team is committed to completing it thoroughly.

“Some pumps have been temporarily closed, but we’re confident that once finished, both the forecourt and road will be much safer.

“It’s impacting our business right now because some pumps have been barricaded, but we’re confident that once the project is completed, the site and the road will be much safer and fully functional.”

Foley praised the collaboration between the business and authorities.

“This is a great example of community co-operation. When local businesses take responsibility and authorities work together, we can solve problems efficiently and make Lonehill a better place for everyone.”
