Actor Nkosinathi Mazwai takes on Broadway’s iconic Chicago at Montecasino

With a lifelong love of the stage and a childhood dream realised, Nkosinathi Mazwai steps into Chicago like he was born to perform.

When a performer hears the words, ‘You’ve got the role’ for a show as iconic as Chicago, it’s a moment that can make your heart race with excitement, and for Nkosinathi Mazwai, that phone call was exactly that.

From his earliest school plays to serious study at the Waterfront Theatre School in Cape Town, performing has been at the heart of his life.

But stepping onto the stage of a production with such a rich history brought a mix of excitement, nerves, and gratitude that only a show like Chicago could inspire.

For those who may not be familiar, Chicago is a legendary musical by John Kander and Fred Ebb, first performed in 1975 and based on a 1926 play by Maurine Dallas Watkins.

The story satirises the corruption of the criminal justice system by following two vaudeville-inspired murderers, Velma Kelly and Roxie Hart, in the Jazz Age of Chicago. Known for its iconic songs like All That Jazz and Cell Block Tango, stunning choreography, and electrifying production, it has become Broadway’s longest-running American musical.

“I feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude to be part of it. I spent a lot of my earlier years doing independent theatre, so this is my first time stepping into something with such an iconic nameplate and illustrious history.

Being involved with other performers who’ve done this show before makes you realise you’re part of something much bigger than yourself. It’s a great honour.”

Though he didn’t see previous South African runs in 2005 or 2018, Mazwai has long been familiar with the musical’s energy and style.

“I’ve seen the film, which has become quite a pop culture staple, and you hear the songs everywhere. You know the story, even if you haven’t seen it live. Stepping into it was a very exciting process.”

Among the high-energy numbers, he highlights one in particular: Roxie. “Roxie Hart takes a moment to talk to the audience, and then it turns into the song.

The male ensemble comes out, and we all dance in support of her. We’ve performed it a few times now, and every time I do it, I have an absolute smile on my face. It’s really fun and such a wonderful number to dance to.”

He said balancing acting, singing, and intricate choreography can seem daunting, but careful guidance from their choreographer and director ensures the story always comes first.

“The choreography works with the music to advance the story. Once you learn all three elements, it becomes easy to put them together; they serve each other, creating something really special.”

NKosinathi’s journey into performance began at just three years old. “I always acted in school plays and knew I wanted to do it professionally.

I even considered studying law, but my parents were incredibly supportive, letting me attend Waterfront Theatre School. I haven’t looked back since.”

He said the excitement of joining Chicago was immediate. “When my agents called, it was an immediate yes. There was no thinking about it; I just knew I had to be part of it. Of course, the nerves set in afterwards, because you want to do justice to something so iconic.”

After three weeks at Cape Town’s Artscape Theatre, the cast moves to Montecasino, promising Johannesburg audiences a polished, intricate, and thrilling performance.

“Audiences can expect a show that’s slick and well-crafted, with attention to detail. It’s exciting, fun, and anyone who comes to watch will leave with something truly special.”

The show will run at Montecasino’s Teatro, Johannesburg, from October 3 to November 16. Tickets are on sale at Ticketmaster.co.za.
