Cedarwood School learners present their real-world business ideas during the Shark Tank challenge

The learners put their entrepreneurial skills to the test, pitching innovative business ideas to real investors during an exciting evening.

Grade 10 business studies learners at Cedarwood School recently had the opportunity to put theory into practice during an exciting Shark Tank evening.
This took place in front of the best in the business, Tyrin Naidoo and Chantal van Dyk, who were invited as guests to share their wealth of knowledge in business with the learners.

The event allowed the learners to pitch their business ideas to investors or ‘sharks’ in the hope of receiving investment and mentorship.

“Shark Tank provided a platform for the pupils to use the theory they have learnt and apply it,” said business studies teacher Stuart Kinsey. “After the pupils presented their business ideas, the sharks questioned them about their business model, market, and made counteroffers. Through this experience, pupils gained real-world insight into entrepreneurship.”

The learners prepared for the event by meeting for a minimum of one hour per week as a team to refine their business models. Kinsey stood as a guide to support their preparations. Four teams, Pro Specs, Chill Chair, Nudgepack, and Agri Paw, participated in the challenge, each showcasing a creative and forward-thinking concept.

Pro Specs introduced smart glasses equipped with advanced safety features, Chill Chair showcased a portable, pick-up-and-go chair designed with built-in cooling technology, perfect for long hours of sitting, Nudgepack impressed with a smart backpack featuring a built-in tracker that alerts users when the bag, or its valuables, are left behind, and lastly, Agri Paw unveiled a dual-purpose solution: a microchip for farm animals and a collar for pets, both designed to monitor key health indicators.

Kinsey said the winning team, Pro Specs, impressed both the teacher and the sharks with their detailed presentation, confidence, and strong responses to questions. “Chill Chair was also an exciting, innovative idea.”

The learners felt a mix of nerves and excitement, presenting in front of the sharks, teachers, fellow learners, and their families. For many, it was the largest audience they had ever presented in front of.

Reflecting on the experience, Onthatile Nyeli, a member of the Pro Specs team, said, “This process taught me the importance of teamwork, and to think creatively.”
