Thinking of gifting a pet this Christmas? Here’s what you should know

As festive excitement builds, many families consider adding a furry friend to their Christmas gift list, but animal welfare experts urge residents to think carefully before turning pets into presents.

The festive season often inspires grand gestures of love, joy, and generosity.
For some, that includes gifting a pet to a loved one, a moment that seems heartwarming and magical, but behind the excitement lies a serious question: Is a pet really the right Christmas gift?

According to Jayme Abbot, of Woodrock Animal Rescue, gifting a pet is a far bigger decision than many realise. “Numerous people who receive pets as gifts often discover they are unable to fulfil the lifelong commitment of caring for their new furry companion, resulting in many animals ending up in shelters.”

Pets are not short-term companions. They are a commitment that can span ten years or more. Whether it’s a playful puppy, a calm cat, or a low-maintenance pet like a fish, every animal requires consistent love, attention, and resources. Abbot stresses the importance of transparency. “It’s essential to evaluate the recipient’s lifestyle, living situation, and willingness to provide the care and attention required.”

Before surprising someone with a living, breathing companion, experts recommend an open and honest conversation. Instead of a Christmas morning reveal, consider discussing the idea in advance and involving the recipient in choosing the pet.

This not only ensures preparedness; it helps match the right animal to the right person. While some may thrive with a high-energy puppy who needs daily activity, others might prefer the quieter companionship of a cat or the gentle calm of a fish.

If the decision to gift a pet is mutual, and well thought out, residents are encouraged to consider adoption. Shelters across Johannesburg are filled with animals waiting for loving homes, and choosing to adopt can give a second chance to an animal in need.

Pets can bring incredible joy, comfort, and companionship, but only when their arrival is grounded in readiness and commitment. “By taking these considerate steps, you can help ensure that both the pet and its new owner develop a joyful and fulfilling bond, bringing happiness for years to come.”

This festive season, let’s prioritise responsibility and kindness. A pet should never be an impulse gift. It should be a well-planned, shared decision that enriches both lives.

What to consider when planning to gift a pet:

  • Is the recipient ready for the responsibility? Regular feeding, exercise, grooming, and training take time and energy.
  • Do they have the financial capacity? Veterinary care, vaccinations, food, bedding, and unexpected costs can add up.
  • Does their lifestyle allow it? Travel schedules, work hours, and household stability play a big role.
  • Is their living environment suitable? Are pets allowed on the property? Is there enough space? Are there other animals?
