Meet the new, dangerous face from etv’s Scandal!

Seasoned actor Bafana Mthembu reflects on his Scandal! debut, the mystery of his character, and the purpose that drives him beyond the screen.

Actor Bafana Mthembu, from Diepsloot, has officially made his debut on Scandal! on e.tv, stepping into the role of a mysterious underworld figure responsible for supplying guns to tycoons.

The character operates without a fixed identity, going by many names, or none at all, in an effort to remain untouchable and unseen.

The role mirrors an intriguing contrast to Mthembu’s real-life persona, where he himself carries many titles. Beyond acting, Mthembu is a businessman, philanthropist, and an activist, a balance he says comes naturally to him.

Mthembu’s acting journey began in 2012, when he started formal drama training at the University of Johannesburg, before further sharpening his craft at The South African State Theatre between 2014 and 2015.

From there, his television career grew steadily, with appearances on major productions including Generations: The Legacy, DiepCity, My Brother’s Keeper, Isiphindiselo, and Isibaya, among others.

Reflecting on his Scandal! debut, Mthembu says the response from his fans and community has been overwhelming. “When I shot my first episode on Scandal!, I received a lot of calls from people around me. They told me they loved the work and appreciated the on-screen presence.”

Speaking about the character he portrays, Mthembu said that the role feels familiar in many ways. “This character is actually similar to roles I’ve played before. I feel like these kinds of characters love me. So, every time show directors needs someone who is dangerous, they think of me.” That shows how good he is with playing tough and dangerous on television.

Despite the darker and more complex nature of the role, Mthembu describes the audience’s reaction as humbling. “As an actor, that kind of feedback reminds you why you do what you do.”

Much like the character he plays, who exists quietly in the background while pulling major strings, Mthembu himself does not seek attention off screen. Acting, he explains, is only one part of his life. Outside the spotlight, Mthembu is deeply involved in activism, work he says he takes seriously and personally.

One of the most notable actions he participated in last year involved blocking Hobart SPAR Supermarket in Bryanston. following the death of an employee in a lift accident.

“What made us angry at the time was that someone died, but then you continue with business as usual. Instead of offering counselling to fellow staff members and comforting the family, it was business as usual.”

He said the protest was also driven by complaints from the family of the deceased employee. “We thought: ‘Let’s just go and protest’. However, the issue was eventually resolved.”

Mthembu says acting is not a full-time commitment for him. He owns a construction company, which he says allows him to create opportunities for young people in his community when projects arise.

He said the flexibility of his career choices allows him to manage his time effectively and remain present for his family. Despite his growing presence on television, Mthembu remains grounded. He says many people would never know he is an actor. “I don’t carry fame everywhere I go.”
