Ward 115 councillor Mark van der Merwe has issued an urgent warning to residents and motorists following a road collapse at Randa Road circle, believed to be linked to the ongoing sewer line upgrade project in the area.
When travelling around the Craigavon area, motorists will notice that there has been a big sewer line project taking place since November 2024.

According to Van der Merwe, a significant sewer burst led to extensive flooding around the circle, weakening the road structure and ultimately resulting in a collapse.
“There was continuous water flooding in the circle, which compromised the integrity of the road surface.”
The affected section of the circle has since been closed off, with traffic diverted to pass carefully over the remaining open portion. Motorists are being urged to approach the circle with extreme caution and to treat it as a speed bump to avoid potential accidents.

Van der Merwe confirmed that the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) attended the site to assess the extent of the damage.

“JRA said prolonged water exposure caused by the burst significantly eroded the road base, leading to the structural failure.” He further stated that the contractor responsible for the sewer line project will be held accountable for the damage.
“As per the project agreement, the contractor carries responsibility for any infrastructure damage arising during the construction period.” Van der Merwe said he is actively working on this matter to be addressed urgently, and that repairs would be prioritised.
In the meantime, road users are advised to slow down, follow temporary signage, and remain vigilant when travelling through the Randa Road circle.
The project is scheduled to continue until June 2026.
