New life takes root as Fourways Mall gardens flourish

The area once-congested by informal traders has been revitalised into a clean, green, and accessible space, following co-ordinated efforts by stakeholders.

The precinct surrounding Fourways Mall, previously occupied by informal traders who were removed last year as trading on provincial roads is prohibited, has now been transformed into a clean, organised, and greener space.

The changes have also made way for environmental upgrades, including the planting of 200 donated trees along major intersections, which are now taking root and contributing to the area’s renewed look.

Source service manager of the mall Nico Mbumi says the transformation is part of ongoing efforts to maintain a neat and welcoming environment for residents. “We are responsible for making sure the Fourways precinct is neat and clean. Residents can now see how different everything looks. New and refreshed compared to where we come from.

“If you look at the gardens and the trees we’ve planted, you can see how green the area has become.”

In addition to the environmental improvements, the precinct has also addressed previous traffic disruptions. Sections that were once blocked by taxis have been cleared, allowing for smoother movement. “Previously, this section used to be blocked by taxis, but now motorists can drive without any disruptions.”

He credited the progress to collaboration with local taxi associations. “We worked very hard to build a partnership with them, and it is working. There is now better co-ordination, and the space is more organised.”

Maintaining the improved environment remains a priority. Cleaning teams conduct daily litter picking, while the gardens are maintained and watered twice a week to ensure the greenery continues to thrive.
