Residents relieved after clean-up clears overgrown Fourways informal settlement
A major clean-up operation led by the Lovemore Foundation is helping restore safety and dignity to an informal settlement at a busy Fourways intersection.
Residents living in the informal settlement at the corner of Witkoppen Road and Winnie Mandela Drive in Fourways have welcomed a clean-up that has helped clear overgrown vegetation that had made the area unsafe.
The clean-up is being carried out by the Lovemore Foundation, led by its founder, Lovemore Robson, as part of an ongoing effort to improve public spaces across Fourways.

The team cleared thick vegetation, cut long grass, removed weeds and collected litter throughout the settlement and surrounding areas.
Robson said some trees were also trimmed to improve visibility and make the space look tidy.
Amos Maluleki, who resides in the informal settlement, said the community is relieved to see the area cleared.

“We are very excited about the clean-up because now we feel safe. The long weeds and grass had grown around our shacks, and it was unsafe.”
He added that the overgrown vegetation had created difficult and unsafe conditions for families living there.
“We will try to clean up after ourselves and make sure the area stays clean.”

Robson said the project is still ongoing, and he plans to create employment to keep the residents busy by asking them to continue with the clean-up.
“I want them to work in the area to complete the clean-up and remove remaining cut vegetation and pick up litter.”
He added that the clean-up was sponsored by Fourways Improvement District and Fourways Mall.
“Initiatives like this are important for improving the environment and creating safer spaces for both residents and people travelling through the busy intersection.
“It makes me happy to see the place looking clean and safe again.”
