A golfer’s dream comes true Kazima’s journey to LIV Golf
While many fans were content watching the drama of professional golf from the comfort of their couches, Gray decided that seeing history in the making required a bit more effort, specifically, a flight from Malawi.
Malawian Grey Kazima used to watch his favourite golfers on television, following them religiously as a die-hard golf fan.
When it was announced that the first-ever LIV Golf tournament was coming to African soil, he started saving up for his flight to South Africa two months in advance.

He said being at the historic tournament at Steyn City wasn’t just about watching golf; it was the ultimate payoff for a 20-year devotion to the game.
His journey to this moment began, not on a golf course, but on a football pitch. After a nasty ankle injury in 2005 ended his social football days, he knew he needed a sport that could carry him through the years. “I needed to identify a sport I could play even in my old age, and my love for golf started developing from there. I’m a huge fan, an addict of golf, that’s why I’m here, I had to make sure.”
By 2015, he owned his first set of clubs, and by 2017, he was taking formal lessons at Lilongwe Golf Club. Today, he considers himself more than just a casual player.
When talks of the LIV Golf circuit coming to South Africa began circulating, he was hooked. He followed every update closely, determined not to miss out. Once the dates were confirmed, he spent two months preparing for the trip. “I took time to prepare myself, put my finances in order, and made this happen.

“I made it a point to make sure that, whatever happens, I would find myself there. It wasn’t easy. There were moments of doubt, times when I wondered if the sacrifices were worth it, but I reminded myself that opportunities like this don’t come often, and when they do, you have to be ready to seize them.
“Standing here today, I know every step, every challenge, was leading me to this moment.”
Kazima finally got to see his heroes, players such as Bryson DeChambeau, Tyrrell Hatton, and Cameron Smith, up close.
Yet, despite his admiration for the global stars, it was the homegrown talent that stirred his pride the most. “I can’t forget the South African crew, like Louis Oosthuizen and Dean Burmester, and the fact that South Africa is hosting this event is a win for the entire continent.
“Africa has proven a point, just like the World Cup in 2010, South Africa has done it again on behalf of all of us Africans.”
