Councillor honoured with lifetime achievement award

Councillor Annette Deppe’s dedication to being the community's pillar of strength finally paid off as she received a lifetime achievement award for her hard work of being a persistent voice for her community.

Ward 132 councillor Annette Deppe has long been the voice of the voiceless.

When her community struggled to make its cries heard, she stepped forward with courage.

Deppe has always seen both the challenges and the potential of the people she serves. She believes that real change comes when someone is willing to take action, and her years of dedication have proved exactly that.

She was honoured recently with a lifetime achievement award, recognising her tireless work and lasting impact. “Becoming a councilor gave me the platform to turn concern into meaningful service and to actively work toward improving people’s daily lives.”

Deppe got involved in countless community meetings, clean-up campaigns, and disaster response efforts, such as flood interventions, and ongoing engagement with residents to address service delivery issues.

“This journey has been both humbling and deeply fulfilling. Receiving a lifetime achievement award is incredibly special, not just a personal milestone, but a recognition of years of hard work, resilience, and commitment to the people I serve. It reinforces that the work we do truly mattered”

The award, presented to her on March 28, symbolises commitment and consistency to her work. According to Deppe, over nearly two decades, she has remained determined to be accessible, responsive, and focused on solutions, always about showing up and doing the work, and never losing sight of why she started it.

“One thing I enjoy the most is being able to make a tangible difference in people’s lives, whether it’s resolving an issue, improving infrastructure, or simply being there to listen.

“A moment that stands out is assisting residents during severe flooding incidents, where infrastructure failures put homes and lives at risk. Being able to mobilise the relevant departments and push for urgent intervention was incredibly impactful.”

The flooded areas included Sunninghill, Vorna Valley, and some parts in the township, with many people losing their goods. She said she was there to help them claim from the city, and she forced a master plan to be done for Vorna Valley Vlei, with a three-year budget.

Knowing that there is always more to be done and playing a role in improving the community is what keeps Deppe motivated and inspired each day to do her work.
