Fourways and Bryanston High School rival for charity

The annual Derby Day between Fourways High School and Bryanston High School combined fierce sporting competition with fundraising efforts in support of the South African Guide-Dogs Association.

The spirit was high at Fourways High School as it hosted its annual Derby Day against rival school Bryanston High School, but beyond the action on the field, the event carried a much deeper purpose.

This year’s derby was held in support of the South African Guide-Dogs Association, with proceeds from ticket sales and various fundraising activities going towards the organisation.

Fourways High marketing officer, Paula Agar, explained that the annual derby has always focused on bringing the two school communities together for a meaningful cause.

“This is our annual Derby Day against Bryanston High, and our theme every year is ‘Rivals Unite for a Cause’.

“Whichever school is hosting chooses the charity for the year, and this year we’ve chosen the South African Guide-Dogs Association. All proceeds from the day go to the charity.”

Agar said the schools organised several fundraising initiatives in the lead-up to the derby, including civvies days, temporary tattoo sales and other activities aimed at encouraging learners to contribute.

“All of that money goes to SA Guide-Dogs. While the kids are competing on the field, it also brings together unity between the two schools.”

Agar expressed excitement over the overwhelming attendance and community support shown throughout the day.

“We are really thrilled with the turnout.

“Bryanston has turned out in force. They brought buses of athletes and scholars, and most of our students are here as well. Watching the gate, it also looks like the community is turning out.”

She added that many attendees willingly donated more than the entrance fee in support of the charity.
