Inter-Crawford Sports Festival builds connections

Crawford athletes from South Africa and Kenya came together at Crawford International Lonehill for three days of sport, culture, and camaraderie.

What began as a vision to unite schools has grown into a powerful celebration of connection.

Crawford International Lonehill hosted the Inter-Crawford Sports Festival 2026, bringing together more than 600 athletes from across South Africa and Kenya. While the festival delivered its fair share of thrilling on-field action, the true highlight lay beyond the scorelines, in the friendships formed, cultures shared, and sense of belonging created among learners.

The three-day event, held from March 22 to 24, welcomed participants from Crawford Bedfordview, La Lucia, North Coast, Pretoria, Ruimsig, Sandton, Kenya, and the host school.

Competing in tennis, chess, soccer, hockey, netball, and basketball, learners embraced both the competitive and social aspects of the tournament.

Head of sport and organiser Kelsey Thompson said the event captured the essence of school sport.

“This festival is about more than just results; it’s about creating an environment where learners can challenge themselves, support one another, and experience the spirit of being part of something bigger than their own school. Seeing that come to life over these three days has been incredibly rewarding.”

School principal Dimitra Adramitoglou said the event continues to strengthen the identity of the Crawford community.

“What stands out is how naturally learners connect. They arrive as representatives of different campuses, but very quickly, they find common ground. That sense of unity and belonging is what makes this festival so special.”

International guest, deputy principal for sport and outreach at Crawford International Kenya Kizito Wafula Okumu, emphasised the value of exposure and growth. “For our students, this is an opportunity to grow beyond the classroom and beyond their own environment.

Competing at this level challenges them, but, just as importantly, it allows them to build relationships and learn from others.”

Fellow deputy principal and coach Vincent Onguso Kegwaro highlighted the lasting impact on learners

.“These experiences stay with them. The friendships they form and the lessons they learn here go far beyond the field of play.”
