South Africa hosts 46th SADC Summit in Durban

The country takes over leadership of the bloc after the high-level gathering next month in KwaZulu-Natal.

South Africa will host the 46th Ordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) from August 16 to 17 in Durban.

The gathering signals the start of the country’s one-year leadership of the bloc, following its current interim role.

Can the summit resolve the current issues brewing around tensions in South Africa and uplift the communities in the region? That question is on the minds of many in Johannesburg residents and beyond, as regional leaders prepare to meet.

In a recent address on illegal immigration, President Cyril Ramaphosa made it clear South Africa cannot address migration challenges alone.

“Migration is a continental and global phenomenon. South Africa’s future is inseparable from the future of the African continent. Migration pressures cannot be addressed through enforcement measures alone.

They require peace where there is conflict, economic growth where there is stagnation, and opportunity where there is poverty.”

Ramaphosa added that South Africa will keep working with sister countries to build an Africa in which people move by choice, and not by desperation.

“Through SADC, the African Union, and in our bilateral relations with other countries, we will seek to find sustainable solutions to these challenges.”

As part of this effort, the president will send envoys to a number of sister African countries to outline the measures announced.
