Councillor calls for stronger action against illegal taxi rank at the corner of Bushwillow Ave and Uranium Street in Fourways

No-parking signs, road markings, and repeated complaints have failed to stop taxis from taking over a busy roadside slipway at the corner of Bushwillow Ave and Uranium Street.

Ward 94 councillor David Foley is calling for stronger and more consistent law enforcement action to address an illegal taxi rank operating at the corner of Bushwillow Ave and Uranium Street.

Foley said he has received numerous complaints from residents about taxis occupying a slipway on Uranium Road, creating safety concerns for motorists and contributing to disorder in the area. “I’ve had a significant number of complaints from residents regarding what seems to be an emerging taxi rank here. My inbox has been flooded with emails from concerned community members who say the situation is becoming a growing problem.”

Speaking at the site, Foley said several attempts have been made over the past year to stop the illegal activity. These included working with Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) to paint traffic islands and install no-parking signs.

Despite these efforts taxi drivers continue to use the area as a taxi rank, and even wash vehicles there. “The taxis are simply ignoring the no-parking signs. They are literally parked next to it and wash the taxis there as well.”

He added that he regularly requests the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) to monitor the area but believes a more sustained approach is needed to change behaviour.

According to Foley, taxis parked along the slipway make it dangerous for motorists turning from Bushwillow Street onto Uranium Road, as visibility is reduced.

He also raised concerns about the impact on the surrounding area, saying informal taxi activity often leads to littering and increased pedestrian traffic. “This started at least a year ago and there have been multiple interventions, but unfortunately the problem continues.”

Foley is now urging authorities to intensify enforcement efforts and encourage taxi operators to use designated parking and loading zones, instead of occupying the roadside.

He believes consistent action will help improve road safety and prevent further deterioration of the area.
