Mulbarton Manor Retirement Estate wellness day connects residents to services

Elders at Mulbarton Manor Retirement Estate attended a winter wellness day, learning about ways to take care of themselves and stay healthier in their old age.

Residents of Mulbarton Manor Retirement Estate recently attended a health and wellness day, designed to connect them with healthcare and community support services and to promote healthy living.

The event brought together various service providers and residents in one space, allowing both groups to engage and share information.

According to Ruby Living’s head of care Sakhe Jabaza: “Events like these help residents know what support is available, while helping service providers become more responsive to the needs of service users.”

Residents were offered a range of basic health screenings, including blood pressure, pulse and heart rate checks, blood sugar testing, cholesterol screening, weight monitoring, and waist circumference measurements.

Jabaza said the view their retirement estates as communities, and aim to bring quality services directly to residents.

“We always want to attract good community services to our estates, so that residents do not have to travel elsewhere to access even basic services.”

A health talk also formed part of the programme, focusing on both internal and external services available to residents and how they can access them when needed.

The discussion highlighted the importance of residents understanding the support structures available to them and how these resources can assist them in maintaining a good quality of life.

Organisers said they hope residents feel empowered to make use of the services and resources available, so that they can continue living fulfilling and meaningful lives.

Residents expressed appreciation for the initiative, and said they were pleased to learn more about the support services available to them.

Many noted that safety, comfort, and access to assistance were among the main reasons they chose to live in a retirement estate.

One of the most common health concerns raised during the event was polypharmacy, which refers to the use of multiple medications by older adults.

The health and wellness day is expected to become an annual event and will be hosted each June.
