Second leak discovered on Witkoppen Road as Johannesburg Water extends repair timeframe

Ward 93 councillor Vino Reddy says Johannesburg Water has identified another leak beneath Witkoppen Road, with the road set to remain closed until further notice.

Just days after Johannesburg Water completed repairs to a water leak that had persisted for three months on Witkoppen Road, technicians have discovered a second leak at the same site, delaying the reopening of the road.

Ward 93 councillor Vino Reddy said Johannesburg Water has been monitoring the site since repair work was completed on July 2.

While the excavation pit was drained following the repairs, water levels gradually rose again to about halfway up the exposed pipe, prompting further investigations.

“Johannesburg Water has confirmed that there is another leak at the point where the pipe is balanced.

“The delay in repairs is due to Johannesburg Water procuring an excavator, as a TLB is not powerful enough to lift the tar and concrete base layer.”

The affected section of Witkoppen Road will remain closed while the additional repairs are carried out, with no estimated timeframe for reopening.

He acknowledged the ongoing frustration experienced by motorists and residents using the busy route.

“I have impressed upon Johannesburg Water the importance of concluding the repairs owing to the massive delays and frustration experienced by residents.”

Reddy added that Johannesburg Water will continue working at the site until the newly identified leak has been repaired and the integrity of the pipeline can be confirmed.

Johannesburg Water teams previously confirmed to Fourways Review that the initial leak was fixed and was busy monitoring the situation before the excavation could be closed. Until then, motorists are urged to continue exercising caution and to make use of alternative routes where possible.

The water utility has been reached out to for comment regarding the second leak. An update will be provided once received.
