Johannesburg Water finally fixes Bryan Brook Estate leak

After two years of uncertainty, Johannesburg Water confirms repairs to the Witkoppen Road leak are complete, attributing the issue to a pipe connection failure.

After years of disruption, the long-standing water leak outside Bryan Brook Estate on Witkoppen Road has finally been repaired, with Johannesburg Water (JW) confirming that work was completed on April 22.

The repair marks a turning point in a saga that saw months of uncertainty and back-and-forth between city entities over the source of the problem, which caused significant damage to the road surface and frustration among residents and motorists.

According to Phakamani Ndlovu, of Johannesburg Water, the delay was due to two separate issues, rather than a dispute over responsibility.

He said an initial investigation linked the problem to groundwater, which was addressed following water quality tests.

“Johannesburg Water did not shift responsibility.

There were two separate issues. The first one was related to groundwater, which was investigated and resolved based on water quality test results. The current repair relates to a separate pipe infrastructure fault.”

“The affected section has been replaced with appropriate piping and connections, and the repair method is designed to provide a long-term, permanent solution.”

Ward 93 councillor Vino Reddy welcomed the progress, noting that contractors had undertaken extensive work on site, including tunnelling beneath Witkoppen Road to install new piping and redirect water away from the road structure.

While the leak has now been resolved, road users may still experience some disruption as Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) undertakes the final phase of repairs. Ndlovu confirmed that road reinstatement has been escalated to JRA.

“Co-ordination between the entities is ongoing to ensure this is completed as soon as possible.”
