Free Women’s Month self-defence workshop aims to empower Fourways women

QuanWessels Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy and Tribe Martial Arts Foundation are inviting women to take part in a free self-defence workshop this Women's Month to learn practical skills, boost confidence and improve personal safety.

To celebrate Women’s Month, QuanWessels Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy and Tribe Martial Arts Foundation are hosting a free ladies’ self-defence class on August 10, giving women in the Fourways community an opportunity to learn practical skills that could one day save a life.

The session is open to women of all ages and fitness levels, with participation limited to 50 attendees.

Suzanne Fernandes of QuanWessels Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu said the workshop is designed to equip women with practical self-defence techniques, increase situational awareness, and build the confidence to respond effectively in threatening situations.

“Participants will learn the fundamental principles of personal safety, how to avoid and de-escalate danger where possible, and simple yet effective techniques rooted in Brazilian jiu-jitsu.”

The initiative forms part of the mission of the foundation, a non-profit organisation dedicated to empowering women, children and young people affected by violence, bullying and limited opportunities.

Through martial arts, education and mentorship, the foundation aims to build confidence, resilience and life skills that extend well beyond the training mats.

“Self-defence is about more than physical techniques. It’s about giving women the confidence to trust themselves, make better decisions under pressure, and know they have options should they ever face a dangerous situation.”
