Residents invited to Douglasdale spring clean on October 3
Residents are invited to join a community-led clean-up aimed at restoring two key Douglasdale intersections.
Residents are invited to roll up their sleeves and join the Douglasdale spring clean on October 3 from 08:00 to 12:00, as the community comes together to clean and revitalise two public spaces.
The clean-up will focus on the verge garden, the enclosed portion of land at the intersection of Leslie Avenue and Westway Road, as well as the verges at Douglas Drive and Crawford and Galloway roads.

Organiser Susan Mottram said the initiative was built around the belief that individual contributions can make a collective difference. “How many people does it take to make a difference to your country, your neighbourhood, your street? ‘I’m only one person, what can I do’, said eight billion people. I don’t know who said that, but there is the truth. It is the answer to many of our collective woes.”
Mottram said the clean-up would allow residents to work together while improving spaces in their neighbourhood. “We’ll get a little dirty, we’ll get to know each other a little, and we’ll feel a lot better about our neighbourhood when we see the beautiful, clean spaces we have restored together,” she said.

Volunteers are encouraged to bring spades, rakes, trowels, grass cutters, pruning shears, brooms and strong refuse bags. The organisers have also appealed for donations of vygie plants to help cover exposed soil.
The Douglasdale Business and Residents Forum has supported and maintained verge gardens in the area since 2008, with members contributing towards gardeners’ wages, plants, compost and gardening equipment. Mottram said additional financial support would help the organisers hire extra assistance and remove garden refuse following the clean-up.
The initiative will also receive support from businesses and organisations including Night Guard Security, Trinity Group landscaping and Whole Earth Organic Farm, with Whole Earth donating compost valued at more than R3 000.
