Road-marking work under way at key Sunninghill intersection
Road-marking work has started in Sunninghill, with the roads agency responding to concerns about faded markings and the quality of paint being used.
Road-marking work has started at the intersection of Tudor Avenue and Spitfire Street in Sunninghill after residents raised concerns about faded markings.
Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) previously told Fourways Review it was waiting for paint delivery before continuing work. Ward 93 councillor Vino Reddy welcomed the project, saying road markings had concerned residents for some time. However, Reddy questioned the durability of the new paint, noting previous markings faded within weeks.

He said he had raised the issue with the agency, which attributed paint durability to contractor supplies.
JRA acting head of department for regional operations Mpho Maruping said the agency received its latest paint delivery and was satisfied with the quality. “We are using the road-marking paint that complies with the approved JRA specifications and quality requirements,” Maruping said. He added that JRA tests samples from suppliers prior to delivery to ensure compliance. Only paint meeting these requirements is accepted, according to Maruping.
JRA also disputed claims that markings faded within weeks. “That is not true. We have inspectors that verify the work done,” he said.
The agency said other road-marking work in Fourways and surrounding areas is being prioritised based on road conditions, traffic volumes, and safety concerns. Maruping said requests and complaints from councillors and residents are also considered. Priority goes to locations where faded or missing markings pose significant safety risks.

While JRA has a planned maintenance schedule across Johannesburg, material availability affects timing. Maruping said the agency is reviewing its supply approach to improve continuity and reduce backlog. For now, resources are directed towards critical areas through a phased plan to restore road markings where safety is concerned.
