Needles clicked, yarn moved, and memories came alive as Community Hours brought people together for another Knit at the Movies afternoon at Ster-Kinekor Cedar Square.

The event drew 123 women who knitted and crocheted while enjoying the film, with singing and dancing adding to the fun.

Beyond the movie, the gathering highlighted how a simple shared activity can create connection, friendship and a sense of belonging.

Community Hours founder Sarah Welton-Blake said the initiative was created to make volunteering more accessible and enjoyable while bringing people of different generations together.

Welton-Blake said the Knit at the Movies concept was born from a desire to combine community, creativity and social impact.

“We looked at different ways that we could collaborate with communities to say, how do we extend this, how do we make this fun, how do we build communities, and how do we keep doing things which have a social impact,” she said.

“Knit at the Movies, or crocheting at the movies, is an event to which everybody is invited, and we’d love to see more people joining us.”

The monthly event costs R50 and welcomes experienced crafters and those simply looking to enjoy an afternoon of connection and creativity.
