VIDEO: Brazen East Rand filling station robbery

Kempton Park police are looking for four suspects in connection with a business robbery captured on CCTV at an Engen garage in Isando, on the East Rand.

In the video, the suspects are seen brazenly entering the petrol station shop before approaching the teller who seemingly pressed a panic button on September 12. The suspects are then seen emptying the till while the other suspects calmly chat to the teller.

Owner of the filling station, Clive Husband, said the garage had been the target of armed robberies and this incident was the second in two weeks, Kempton Express reported.

In both instances, one of the suspects took the same packet of chewing gum. The owner suspects it is the same group targeting the station.

Husband said on the morning of the latest incident, four suspects walked into the garage’s shop at about 5am. One of the suspect pulled out a firearm then put it in his pants.

“There were two cashiers in the shop and two petrol attendants who were outside and didn’t see anything. The suspects took cash from the tills, three cellphones and the packet of gum,” he added.

Husband believes the robbery could be an inside job. He added that the first incident on August 29 was the first crime they had encountered in about 10 years.

“Three guys then took around R4 000 cash from the tills, cigarettes, cold drinks, chips and a pack of gum, as well as a customer’s wallet,” he said.

Kempton Park police spokesperson Captain Jethro Mtshali confirmed the incident and pointed out that the suspects fled the scene in a red Polo that was waiting outside. A case of business robbery was under investigation.
