QuanWessels Kids shine with 19 medals at season opener
Young Brazilian jiu-jitsu athletes from QuanWessels Kids Team launched their 2026 campaign in style, securing 19 out of 20 athletes medaling at the first Submission Kings and Queens tournament.
The QuanWessels (QW) Kids Team kicked off their 2026 competition season in dominant fashion, delivering an exceptional performance at the first martial arts Submission Kings and Queens tournament of the year.
Fielding a team of 20 young athletes across a wide spectrum of ages and experience levels, from 6-year-old white belts to 16-year-old grey belts, the team demonstrated both depth and determination. An impressive 19 out of the 20 competitors returned home with medals, achieving a remarkable overall team win rate of 72%.
The team’s medal haul included nine gold medals, eight silver and two bronze.
Among the standout performers was John Meso, who competed under the QW banner as a beneficiary of the Tribe Martial Arts Foundation. The foundation is an initiative aimed at providing access to martial arts training and competition opportunities for young athletes who may not otherwise have the resources to participate.

Showing grit beyond his years, John earned a silver medal in his division while competing against opponents in a higher weight category.
Head coach Guy Lazarus praised the team’s efforts and highlighted the deeper impact of competition:
“We are so proud of our kids. They continue to improve in their skill sets and maturity with every competition we compete in. While the results are phenomenal, it’s their growth into strong, confident individuals that is truly inspirational. Winning is simply a result of the hard work they put into training every day.”

Beyond the podium finishes, the team’s performance reflects the values instilled at QuanWessels: discipline, resilience, and confidence, helping shape well-rounded young individuals on and off the mats.
The academy continues to welcome new students, offering Brazilian jiu-jitsu and martial arts programmes for children of all ages.

The academy provides a structured, supportive environment where children can build confidence, learn self-defence, and develop lifelong skills through training and competition.
Looking ahead, QuanWessels will host the upcoming Sunninghill Gi Open on April 11, the next opportunity for young athletes to test themselves in competition and continue their development on the mats.
