Dirty hands for Mbeki

LION PARK - Thabo Mbeki Village was the launch site of a new initiative in Ward 96.

Councillor for the ward Matome Mafokwane, a swarm of Pikitup workers, politicians, City of Johannesburg delegates and businesses descended on the informal settlement for the first clean-up campaign in the ward, where Mafokwane hopes residents will take care of their environment.

“There is a perception that people from informal settlements don’t take pride in their surrounds,” Mafokwane said.

He said these people lived in abject poverty and deserved better. A clean environment was the first step into fostering care for their place of residence.

Thabo Mbeki Village is also the site of the Lion Park development. The plans include 12 000 low cost housing for residents of Kya Sand and Cosmo City.

The clean-up day saw soccer matches between volunteers and children from the settlement, and food sponsored from companies was distributed to those who took part.

Mafokwane hopes to hold the same campaign at other settlements in his ward.
