Squash champs looking for support

LONEHILL - Resident, Celeste Tucker and her squash partner, Jennifer Sawyer, are trying to raise money so that they can attend the World Masters Squash Championships in Hong Kong next year.

As part of their fundraising, the Cresta Barnyard Theatre will hold an 80s vs 90s night, where a portion of the ticket sales will go towards their fundraising kitty. Tucker and Sawyer are in the 50 to 54 age group and were the winners at the SA Masters. They have also won the national doubles several times. “We strongly feel that we have a very good chance at the championships in 2014,” Tucker said.

She said there were at least 30 to 40 additional masters players that participated at the World Masters Squash Championships every second year. “I went to Sheffield in the UK in the 35 to 39 age group and won the Plate event, which means I came ninth in the world.”

She said Sawyer and herself needed to raise about R20 000 to R25 000 each to cover their airfare and accommodation during their time in Hong Kong.

The fundraising event will be held on 17 August at 7.30pm for 8pm at the Cresta Barnyard Theatre.
