Miles for Smiles puts shoes on children’s feet

FOURWAYS - The Miles of Smiles entertainment company sponsored shoes for 400 children at The Family Africa Project in Diepsloot for Mandela Day.

The project is faith-based and helps thousands of previously disadvantaged people.

Meg White, of the Family Africa, said “For a long time it has been our dream to fit all the children with shoes. Many of them attend The Family Africa Sunday Club barefoot, even in winter; my husband and I saved up so that we could do this for them on Mandela Day.”

White and her husband are unpaid board members for The Family Africa Sunday Club, that meets on Sundays to help out in the community.

Rachel Aird, chairperson of The Family Africa Project, said, “Fitting the children with shoes was a bit like an army operation, with two or three volunteers with each age group, starting from one up to 18 years old.”

According to Aird, Mandela Day was important to the organisation.”He (Nelson Mandela) has done so much for this country and it is fantastic when people honour him by taking time to volunteer to help the disadvantaged. We had over 70 volunteers from corporates, ordinary families or just individuals who took part in our different Mandela Day events,” she said.
