Jimmy is proud in pink

MAGALIESSIG - South African film promotes the colour of individuality

Pink might just be the new colour for the rainbow nation, due to the latest local film offering, Jimmy in Pienk.

On 1 August, actors, press, fans and the production team of Jimmy in Pienk coloured Montecasino for the film’s Johannesburg premiere.

The quirky comedy about Jimmy Bester, a rugged seventh generation mielie farmer, is about not colouring inside the lines. When the farmer steps outside the only world he knows, life becomes more colourful in its chaotic beauty.

Louw Venter, who plays Jimmy, said the highlight of this film has been his own son starring in it, and the excitement of seeing him on screen couldn’t be trumped.

In the film, when Jimmy’s father suddenly dies in a freak accident, he is confronted by two loan sharks who come to collect what his father owes.

While packing his father’s belongings, a distraught Jimmy discovers that his father had a twin brother.

For the first time in his life, Jimmy gathers the courage to leave his home and travel to Cape Town to seek help from his uncle, Fred. But his father’s brother has a bitter grudge against the Bester family, and he hatches a plan to exact revenge on them.

Fred convinces Jimmy to enter a reality TV show, “SA’s Next Super Stylist”.

If Jimmy wins the competition, he can take home the prize money and save his family. With no experience in hairdressing, Jimmy knows that he is likely to fail, but he is willing to risk becoming a laughing stock if it offers him even just the slightest chance of saving his family.

With the final of the competition around the corner – and the loan sharks’ deadline looming – can an honest country boy keep up an elaborate lie, or will the urge to be himself sabotage his chances at winning the contest and saving his beloved farm?

If the reaction from the Johannesburg crowd is anything to go by, the pink spotlight will shine bright on this feel-good comedy that celebrates individuality, life and family.

Jimmy in Pienk opens 16 August.
