FOURWAYS - 32 children transported to hospital after bus accident on Witkoppen Road

Following a bus accident on Witkoppen Road where 32 children were injured, the DA has released a statement urging the Gauteng education department to take action.

“The DA urges the Gauteng education department to ensure provincial and local law and traffic enforcement agencies conduct regular inspections on scholar transport vehicles to guarantee all vehicles abide by the minimum safety standards and traffic laws,” DA spokesperson Khume Ramulifho said in the statement.

The accident occurred on 5 August at the intersection of Witkoppen and Maple roads.

Monday morning (5 August) saw two accidents on major roads connecting Fourways to neighbouring communities.

According to a statement by ER24, at the corners of Witkoppen and Waterford Roads in Douglasdale, a passenger bus appeared to have veered off the road, crashing into a ditch.

Paramedics arrived on the scene and found that 100 pupils, aged 10 years old and younger, managed to climb from the bus and were found seated or walking around the scene.

All of the children were assessed for injuries. and it was found that 32 of them needed further treatment in hospital.

EMER-G-MED paramedic Wayne Broodryk added on Twitter most of the pupils were treated for shock before being transported to hospital, and there were no severe injuries.

The accident caused severe traffic jams along Witkoppen Road and Douglas Drive.

In another accident two taxis were involved in a collision on William Nicol Drive. Paramedics also responded, with only minor injuries reported.
This accident caused severe delays from Dainfern.
