Light as a feather chick welcomed to the world

MAGALIESSIG - Montecasino Bird Gardens welcomes pelican chick.

Some flocking good times are ahead at the Montecasino Bird Gardens.

In mid-August an eastern white pelican chick hatched at the gardens. It is the first pelican to be hatched at the bird park.

Four days after it emerged from it’s shell it weighed only 233.30 grams. It also received it’s first medical examination on the day according to one of the casino’s communication officers, Jené Godfrey.

Fully grown, the bird will weigh up to 15kg.

“The chick does not have a name yet as the Montecasino Bird Gardens are waiting for the DNA sexing results,” she said.

The hope is that the chick will remain in the park with the colony and breed one day. “Only if the chick is ousted from the group or for a serious medical reason will it be removed from the colony.”
