Cycling group supports orphans

FOURWAYS - A Fourways cycling group hopes to change a few lives when they ride the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge in November for the Oasis Haven orphanage.

The cycle group at Cadence Cycling Performance Centre, based in the Design Quarter, has four riders that are gearing up to support the Randburg-based orphanage, which caters for abandoned children and places them in loving homes. The orphanage currently cares for 20 children between the ages of seven months and 16 years.

The cycling team’s Kris Kibble said they were hoping to get at least 15 people to cycle in the name of Oasis Haven.

“I volunteer as a big brother to a little seven-year-old from Oasis. These little guys really don’t have much and all donations go a long way to improving their situation. The Oasis team is a small group of hard working individuals that dedicate themselves to these little guys, and appreciate any help they can get,” said Kibble, when asked why Oasis held a special place in the team’s heart.

He said his ‘little brother’, known as ‘Essentially Justice’, was the most energetic, athletic, happy-go-lucky little boy he had ever met. By law, the Fourways Review cannot print the child’s real name.

“I’ve known Justice for almost two years now and have seen him grow from a small, shy, baby boy in pre-primary school into a confident little boy in Grade One,” Kibble said.

Ivan Achiume, development manager at Oasis Haven said, “Justice came to us at the age of five through a social worker as a case of abandonment. No record of his parents whereabouts or situation is available.”

Achiume said Justice had grown into a ‘boys boy’. “He is active and loves every sport man has made, as it tests his infinite energy. He looks up to Kibble and cherishes the time they spend together.”

“The cycle challenge is massive for Oasis Haven as it raises awareness for our cause and the orphan crisis in the country, while paying for children like Justice’s everyday needs,” Achiume said.
