Wolter rides for Pet Empowerment
FOURWAYS - Jennifer Wolter is taking part in the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge for Pet Empowerment in Townships (Pets).
The cycle challenge has encouraged all entrants to ride for a purpose or for a particular charity.
When Wolter decided to take on the challenge she immediately chose the Fourways based NGO, Pets, as her charity.
Wolter moved to South Africa from the USA six years ago. Soon after, she obtained her first dog, a dobermann called Bruschi. She is dedicating her cycle challenge to her dog, but realised that he needed a friend.
Wolter said, “In the States it’s a lot more common for potential pet owners to adopt rescue dogs. We’ve never had a pet store dog since there were always lovely dogs out there that needed help.”
She started researching rescue organisations online and happened upon Pets.
Wolter got in touch with Pets and began fostering some of their rescues.
She also got involved with their trips into townships to offer help and advice to pet owners.
She said, “Pets is the first place I have known that has such a strong focus on education and care of pets rather than just rescue. They want to provide education and help others give better care to their dogs rather than take them away. They truly have the best interest of the dogs and the families at heart.”
After fostering two dogs from Pets, Wolter eventually found the friend for Bruschi that she’d been looking for.
She explained, “Kaylah was my third foster and she and my dog took a few days to get used to each other but then they seemed like they were meant for each other. She is so friendly and loveable and just loves being around people.”
Entries for the Momentum 94.4 Cycle Challenge close on 1 October.
