A labour of love
Residents of Evergreen Lifestyle Village are serious about their wetland.
The village is situated between a section of the Broadacres wetland and maintaining this environmentally sensitive system has become a labour of love for some senior residents.
To celebrate Arbor Month, 20 residents took time off to plant 66 trees around the wetland.
According to Jill Blignaut, the village manager environmentalist Paul Fairall was consulted on the project.
“He gave instruction to where and which trees should be planted,” she said.
Former engineer and resident Hennie du Preez took charge of teams and worked out the logistics of getting the trees planted.
According to Du Preez six different indigenous tree species were selected.
“We also imported 300 cubic meters of wetland soil from a neighbouring development for the project, to help rehabilitate sections of our wetland,” he said.
Residents donated money and time to buy and plant the trees.
Blignaut said some of the trees were selected to attract different bird species back to the green lung in the village.
