Lion Park Primary is all booked up
Engineering and electronics conglomerate, Phillips donated a library container to Lion Park Primary School.
Phillips has always had a supportive relationship with the school having already donated solar powered LED lights to light up its soccer pitch. (Extended day, extended play, Fourways Review, week ending 25 May)
Marketing and communications officer of Phillips Africa, Lorato Maphiri said while installing the lighting in May, the Phillips team noticed that there was a storage room which contained a lot of books that were not being utilised.
“We knew something had to be done,” she said. “This is why we decided to donate the library container as well as 2 000 additional books that are recommended for grades one to seven.”
The teachers and principal of Lion Park Primary School have big plans for their new library. Apart from pupils being able to read inside the library which is also fully air-conditioned, they will also be able to take books home with them.
School principal Girlie Lehlokwa said, “Most of our learners can’t read because we just didn’t have enough books or a place for pupils to focus on their reading. It’s even difficult for them to get help at home because many of their parents are also illiterate. This is why we would also like to get parents involved with our reading programme.
“It takes a village to raise a child and this library will open so many avenues for our pupils. The words in a book can take you places and in this way our pupils can travel the world from this library container.”
