Special vote applications begin

JOBURG - South Africans who are unable to vote at a voting station on Election Day can from 7 April submit applications to cast a special vote.

Registered voters that require a special vote will need to fill in a VEC1 application form and submit it between 7 and 17 April.

A special vote is offered to the ill, infirm, pregnant women, people with disabilities and those who cannot reach a voting station on 7 May.

Special votes will be cast on 5 and 6 May.

Pregnant women, people with disabilities, the infirm and ill- who successfully apply a special vote- can cast their vote during a home visit by an official on these days.

Meanwhile, those who can travel but cannot vote at their voting station on 7 May due to work or travel, can apply to vote at their voting station on the specified dates.

The VEC1 forms are available on the Independent Electoral Commission’s (IEC) website (https://www.elections.org.za/content/For-Voters/Special-votes/) or from a local IEC office.

However, completed forms can only be hand-delivered to an IEC office, but the form can be delivered on the applicant’s behalf.

Application forms must be submitted by 5pm on 17 April.
