Strikers target Eskom’s Megawatt Park despite interdict
SUNNINGHILL - National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) members gathered outside Megawatt Park in Sunninghill on 2 July to picket for better wages.
The second day of July marks the first day of the Numsa strike which is taking place across South Africa where workers are calling for a 15 percent wage increase for metalworkers.
IOL reported that Eskom had obtained a court interdict on 1 July barring its workers from striking.
Eskom workers affiliated to Numsa had planned to picket outside Megawatt Park to demand a 12 percent raise across the board, a R1000 housing allowance and a R100 stand-by allowance. However Numsa spokesperson, Castro Ngobese said yesterday that the interdict would not stop the demonstration. By midday the strikers outside Megawatt Park had increased their demands to a 15 percent wage increase.
