Witkoppen wetlands gets weeds removed

FOURWAYS - In honour of Mandela Day, Friends of the Witkoppen Wetland Park in collaboration with the Sector 3 Community Policing Forum are organising a park clean up.

According to Carl Houart, caretaker of Friends of the Witkoppen Wetland Park, there has been some progress with removing the weeds and cleaning the dam in the last week, but he wants to clean the rest of the park with the help of the community.

On 4 July, Botho Projects subcontractors started at the park in the morning. According to Houart, the team is under no illusion that it will take them at least a week to 10 days to remove the weeds. He said he was pleasantly surprised when he drove past the wetlands area and saw a group of men removing all the Kariba weed from the dam.

“It has been years since the area has been cleaned. Everyone was concerned about the state of the area, but it just continued to [worsen],” said Houart.

The park clean-up takes place on 19 July between 9am to 11am. There will be coffee served to people who arrive early.
