Heading to the polls? Here’s what to pack in your handbag

With temperatures expected to rise, your handbag needs more than just your ID. Here are a few essentials to pack before joining the voting queue.

With temperatures expected to reach 31°C in Fourways today, residents heading out to vote are being encouraged to prepare for the heat, particularly if they expect to spend time waiting in queues.

One of the residents, Rachel Smith, who is currently at St Peter’s voting station in Ward 93 to cast her vote, said she was eager to participate in the elections and encouraged other residents in the community groups to come prepared for the hot weather. “Bring a hat, umbrella and Sunblock as the queue sections in the sun are cooking hot.”

Smith said there are shaded areas at the school where voters could get some relief from the sun. However, as the queue moves forward, residents may find themselves exposed to direct sunlight again. “I should’ve applied more sunscreen because it is scorching hot, but the lines are moving,” said Smith.

Jenny Ford, did make sure to check the weather forecast before heading to Fourways High to cast her vote. “I knew that there was going to be a long wait, so l downloaded a new audiobook, put my headphones on, and my husband suggested that I take a camping chair and an umbrella to just be able to relax and just protect myself from the sun, makes it much more pleasant waiting in the queue.”

Here’s what you should consider taking along:

  • A bottle of water: Staying hydrated is important, especially when standing outdoors in the heat.
  • Sunscreen: Apply sunscreen before leaving home to protect your skin from the sun.
  • Sunglasses: These can help protect your eyes from the bright sunlight.
  • A hat or cap: Keep your head covered while waiting in queues.
  • A hand-held fan: A small portable fan can offer some relief when temperatures climb.
  • An umbrella: It can provide shade while waiting and come in handy if afternoon thunderstorms develop.
  • A light snack: Pack something small to eat if you anticipate spending a long time at the voting station.
  • Comfortable shoes: You may have to stand for a while, so choose footwear that will keep you comfortable.
  • Your phone and power bank: Keep your phone charged so you can stay connected and follow election updates.

Remember to carry your valid ID document, as it is required to verify your identity before you can vote.
