Forum says no to grime and crime
DOUGLASDALE - Community involvement was the topic of the Douglasdale Business Forum's October meeting.
The forum, comprised of business owners from Douglasdale, meets once a month to discuss ways to improve the community and reduce grime, thereby reducing crime in the area. The focus of October’s meeting was the forum’s pavement beautification campaign, which will be taking place on 29 November at the corner of Douglas Drive and Witkoppen Road. Susan Mottram of the forum, said the campaign will be for the community, by the community.
The pavement beautification will take place from 8am until the process of planting shrubs at the entrance of Douglasdale and cleaning up litter in the immediate vicinity is finished. Mottram said the forum was urging residents to get involved on the day by coming through to clean-up and garden.
“Residents should bring strong plastic bags and garden implements, but must remember to label all of their own implements,” she said. “Don’t forget to wear sun hats and sunblock, and carry water with you.” The forum is also encouraging residents to donate plants like Carpobrotus, Agapanthus and Bougainvillea, as well as compost. However the forum especially wants residents to join in on the day and get to know one another.
Mottram said the clean-up campaign would be a good way for school pupils to complete their community service for the year. The forum is also actively involved in collecting goods for the victims of the Kya Sands fire. Pick n Pay Douglasdale has placed a trolley at the front of the store for residents to donate blankets, food, baby food and water for the victims. Ward councillor for Ward 115, Chris Santana, who also attended the meeting, said they were also looking for volunteers to assist the victims of the fire.
