Passionate about preservation

LONEHILL - Micayla Kerr (10) proved that it's never too young to make a difference by organising her own animal conservation campaign.

Micayla is a Lonehill resident and a pupil at Crawford Lonehill.

According to Micayla’s mom, Nikki, it was a school project about rhinos that set Micayla thinking about animal conservation.

Nikki said while researching the project, Micayla was shocked to see some of the horrific photos of rhinos which had been killed by poachers.

“Seeing your child’s reaction to poaching makes you look at it with a whole new perspective,” Nikki said. Micayla immediately decided she wanted to do something to help the rhinos and Nikki got in touch with a conservation group called Save the Rhinos.

Together Micayla and her mom started putting together the idea for a march to raise awareness of rhino and elephant poaching. Realising they would need community support, the Kerr’s approached the Lonehill Residents’ Association who offered them the chance to use the Lonehill Park Run as a platform for their awareness campaign.

Micayla decided the perfect day to hold the campaign was 4 October, which is World Animal Day. On the day, Micayla dressed as a rhino and handed out information flyers to residents.

With the help of her family and friends she also sold bracelets and collected donations for Save the Rhinos. Micayla said the rhino is her favourite animal, but she also loves her pet cat and hamster.

Despite being so young Micayla already knows she has a passion for animal welfare and would like to be a vet when she grows up.
