Sorority helps end hunger

FOURWAYS - Fourways residents donated their time to help end child hunger by taking part in a Stop Hunger Now food packing event at Fourways Crossing.

The packing event was initiated by University sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA), a sisterhood of women from all over the world who unite to better their communities.

According to Tracy Swatts-Whitfield of AKA, the sorority was founded at Howard University in the US in 1908. Liberia was the first country to form part of the global chapter of the sorority and South Africa is the newest country the sorority has set up a global chapter in.

The food packing event took place in hour-long sessions during which a production line was started to package the dehydrated food and fill boxes with the food packages.

In total, volunteers managed to pack 150 000 meals which will be distributed to early childhood learning centres in Diepsloot, with a portion going towards Ebola relief efforts in Liberia.

“Our newest global chapter is helping out our oldest global chapter,” Swatts-Whitfield said. Rhonda Scott, who organised the packing event, said the event was the largest mall packing event in Stop Hunger Now history.

“There are only three things you can give, your time, your talent or your money,” Scott said. “A Stop Hunger Now packing event requires you to give just one hour of your time to make a difference.”
