Unity College is a school for pupils with delayed scholastic ability based in Broadacres.
Past-pupil, Marc Franz started at Unity in 2008 and left the school in 2013. During his time at the school, Franz was awarded the principle’s trophy and an award for prefect of the year. Franz said he had always been creative and artistic at home.
“I was always making things, painting things and as I got older this became more along the lines of music and photography,” he said. Franz’s mother, Jane Abbott, said Unity College helped her son build his confidence and self-esteem, and allowed him to concentrate on his passions.
“Marc has come to realise that academic achievements are not everything when it comes to living a happy and successful lifestyle,” she said. Franz completed a six-month intensive course in digital photography at the College of Digital Photography in Saxonwold in 2014.
In the same year he also passed his driver’s licence exam on his first try. Franz works as a photographer at airshows and also submits his photographs to print publications. Last year Franz visited Mauritius and this year he took his first trip to Europe. Franz said he learnt a lot about Greek history and local life.
His mom and him travel as a photo-journalistic team and have jointly written a number of articles which have been published.
“We tend to not only do the usual touristy, things but also the unusual,” Abbott said. “We explore the people and places the average tourist would not bother with.”
