Inventor clamps down on safety

BROADACRES - Garrett Scanlon is an Irishman with his sights set on investing in South Africa and its people.

Scanlon and his brother are the inventors of a revolutionary, yet simple, device called a ladder clamp.

He explained that his brother works in the construction industry in South Africa and noticed that many workplace accidents, as well as accidents on the road, occur because of unsecured ladders.

The Scanlon brothers got the idea to make a ladder clamp that can secure a ladder or many ladders to the top of a vehicle during transportation, but can also secure a ladder to scaffold or a wall while a labourer is working.

Scanlon, who has done numerous charity initiatives across Africa, said he believes in his product because it will aid health and safety in the workplace. While it may have been invented by Irishmen, the ladder clamp is a proudly South African product in that it is built in South Africa and created from South African galvanised steel.

“I think the ladder clamp will really help small enterprises because it increases productivity since no one needs to hold the ladder while another worker is on the ladder,” he said. “It also improves security because ladders can now be fixed to scaffold overnight and can’t be stolen.”

Scanlon is employing only local labour to build and market the ladder clamp and hopes to expand the business soon.
