Hundreds of litres of alcohol seized

DIEPSLOOT - More than 700 litres of liquor was seized and 45 people have been arrested in Diepsloot.

According to Warrant Officer Daniel Mavimbela, head of communications for Diepsloot police, during recent meetings held between the community and the police, Diepsloot residents cited liquor outlets as one of the contributors to crime. Residents also suggested that liquor trading hours should be reduced.

Responding to the problem, the Gauteng provincial head office reinforced the local police with the mounted unit, tactical response team, public order policing unity and the K9 unit.

In a sting operation held on 9 December, the liquor was seized from illegal traders. In addition to that, the 45 suspects were arrested for various crimes such as selling alcohol without a licence and being in possession of dagga.

Diepsloot police will carry out similar operations throughout the festive season.

The arrested suspects are expected to appear at the Randburg Magistrates’ Court.
