The Skye is the limit

DAINFERN - Dainfern College pupil Skye Goss may only be 13 years old but her track record as a performing artist shows critical acclaim and a successful future.

Goss has been awarded five gold medals, receiving at least one award for each of the categories she competed in. She competed in solo and group acting, modeling and dancing as well as singing.

She was also awarded the Junior Grand champion of the year award, which goes to a candidate who achieves the highest individual score for a performance across all categories. Goss won with an average of 97 percent, the highest score by a junior in the competition.

She also bagged a fully-paid trip to Los Angeles in July to compete at the World Championships in Hollywood valued at R50 000.

Daughter to former Miss South Africa, Suzette van der Merwe, Goss herself is a budding model who showcased her talent at this year’s SA Championships of Performing Arts in Rustenburg, which she glided through as a semifinalist, achieving over 75 percent for each item she competed in.

The championships were established in 1999 to develop young artists and entertainers on a platform that would offer them international exposure and, often, professional contracts to pursue lucrative careers in the industry.

The championships are aimed at giving dedicated and passionate young artists access to opportunities that they can only dream off. Jill Avis is Goss’ coach and believes she has proven to be a worthy candidate: “Skye is an excellent student and has a natural flair for drama. She is able to perform in all genres and her focused, hard-working attitude has resulted in many outstanding achievements,” she said.

Some of Goss’s most recent achievements include excelling at the National Eisteddfods over the past four years. She was also invited to perform a solo at the Young Performers Showcase in Roodepoort Theatre where she was awarded second place in the top 10 for all preparatory school performers in the Johannesburg and Sandton region.

“It is an extraordinary achievement to be selected for all items in her first year of competing [in the SA Championships of Performing Arts] and clearly demonstrates Skye’s talent and the strong work ethic she showed in her preparation,” Avis said.

Following her stellar performance at this year’s championships, Goss now has her eyes set on a scholarship for performance arts at her school.
