Annual general meeting for Gekco

KYALAMI – Residents and stakeholders in the Kyalami area are encouraged to attend the annual general meeting of the Greater Kyalami Conservancy, better known as Gekco.

It will be held on 26 May at the Kyalami Park Clubhouse on 1 Dahlia Road, and attendees are requested to be there at 6.30pm for 7pm.

“Join us to hear about current issues, achievements made over the past year, and what the future can hold for the conservancy and community,” said chairperson Kristin Kallesen.

During the meeting, operations manager for Dinokeng Game Reserve will elaborate on how the Hennops River community joined a vast majority of neighbouring properties to create a sanctuary for the Big Five and other wildlife.

“While Kyalami is far from a nature reserve,” Kallesen continued, “We have a unique area which has been recognised with the likes of Dinokeng and the Cradle in the recently published Gauteng Environmental Management Framework.”

This allows the conservancy to be recognised as a unique equestrian stronghold and highlighted the importance of conserving wetlands and endangered species. Because Joburg is such a water scarce city, it is vital to conserve such areas as water is stored which, in turn, regulates river flow and prevents flooding.

Boaz Tsebe from the Endangered Wildlife Trust will also be speaking about their Urban Conservation Programme and how communities such as Kyalami can play a part in the sustainability of the city.
